A two-time world champion hoop dancer will headline Beausoleil First Nation’s annual Island in the Sun Powwow on July 11 and 12.
Lisa Odjig will be the head female dancer at this year’s gathering on Christian Island. Odjig is a two-time world hoop champion, the first woman to receive that title.
The powwow will consist of dancing, art, crafts, educational displays and food. Visitors will see the artwork of renowned artist William Monague and craftsperson Velma Smith.
The weekend will begin with the grand entry, when dancers and dignitaries join in a parade to enter the arena. The procession includes eagle staffs, Canadian and American flags, tribal flags, and flags to honour veterans and emergency services personnel.
There will be two grand entries: one at 1 p.m. on July 11 and a second at noon on July 12. A drum social will take place at the powwow grounds on the first evening. The event is open to people from all communities.
