However, since there appears to be some general uneasiness in the public, I make the following suggestion.
Since the county is sure it’s safe, the county should arrange an insurance policy that will pay out in the (unlikely?) event of a problem. I’m sure the county can convince an insurer to write a policy for, say, $100 million for 40 years at a very reasonable premium.
Of course, this policy would have to be in place before any waste is dumped on the site. That way, county taxpayers will know that, should there be any problem, the money is there for remediation. We’re all covered.
If the county can’t convince an insurance company to write such a policy, or if the premiums are going to be really high, then maybe it’s not as safe as he says and we need to rethink our approach to waste management.
There – a straightforward way to silence the critics. Or confirmation that Site 41 is a gamble that no one should be betting on.
