In some parts of the country, up to 70 per cent of wetlands have disappeared, according to a 2008 Parks Canada study.
Many surviving wetlands are under pressure from pollution, human development and invasive species.
It is against that backdrop that the Wye Marsh Wildlife Centre is participating in World Wetlands Day on Feb. 2. The annual event is intended to highlight the need for continued conservation of these areas.
From 1 to 3 p.m., the Wye Marsh will host a special presentation and guided hike. The cost is free with regular admission ($10 for adults, $6.50 for adults and seniors, free for children under three).
