Fourteen schools will be added to the YMCA’s Healthy Active Schools Program thanks to a grant from the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario.
The $25,000 grant will expand the program that was implemented in eight Simcoe County and Muskoka schools last year.
The Healthy Active Schools Program partners school officials and a YMCA coordinator to see what is needed at a specific school to increase physical activity and promote healthy eating.
Last year, in the first year of the program, schools implemented different projects that included establishing an intramural sports program and setting up healthy eating booths at school fun fairs.
The grant comes from the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario’s KidFit Community Advocacy Fund, which helps school and community groups increase physical activity and improve access to healthy food for children in Ontario.
