TD Bank Financial Group recently announced a donation of $150,000 to the YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka’s “Connecting 1 in 5” $16-million capital campaign, which aims to double the number of people the organization serves by 2012.

The “Connecting 1 in 5” campaign is part of a new $40-million investment by YMCA to support the development of infrastructure and programs across Simcoe and Muskoka to strengthen its communities and families.

“We have had a strong presence in the Simcoe and Muskoka region for over 150 years having opened our first Bank of Toronto branch in Barrie in 1856. We’re very proud to support the YMCA with this donation,” said Roger Still, vice-president, TD Canada Trust Business Banking.

“There are hundreds of TD employees working in the area, but they also live here and actively take part in community events. We work hard to fundraise and we invest in local causes because we know we can make a difference together.”

The Connecting 1 in 5 campaign will help the YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka’s staff and volunteers double the number of people they served in 2005 from 60,000 people to 120,000 people by 2012.

The YMCA provides a diverse range of programs and services geared to healthy living and personal growth and development. From providing families and single parents with much needed child care and camping programs, to healthy lifestyle and wellness programs for the diversity of ages, abilities, circumstances or backgrounds that people come from, the YMCA is making an investment in the health and well-being of our communities.

“We are very excited that TD has stepped up as the first financial institution to donate to our fundraising campaign, and hope that their active corporate citizenship will encourage others to follow,” said Tom Coon, CEO, YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka.

“Having the support of local businesses like TD Bank will help us reach our goal of being able to serve one in every five residents in the area rather than one in 10, in particular children and youth.”

The YMCA also has leadership development programs, employment training and outreach programs for adults and at-risk youth. Thousands of children and families are healthier and more engaged by participating in YMCA programs.
