Norm and Nancy Cadeau love to ride for no reason, but took to the road recently for a good cause.
The Victoria Harbour couple recently hopped on to Norm’s Harley Davidson to take part in ‘Ride For Dad,’ a 250-kilometre Poker Ride and charity fundraiser for prostate cancer.
More than 700 riders ranging in age from 17 to 74 took part in the event, which started in Orillia and had stops in Midland, Barrie and Creemore and raised more than $100,000.
The money, says Norm, goes to research and treatment at Orillia’s Soldiers' Memorial Hospital, the leading hospital for prostate cancer research in the area. The couple has taken part in the ride for the past four years, and says it’s a great opportunity to meet new people, have a little fun and get some wind in your face – all while supporting a good cause.
“We’ve known people (affected with prostate cancer). Until you start doing something like this, you don’t really know how many people have had it,” says Norm, adding part of raising awareness it to let people know that men are forced to pay $30 to be tested for the disease. “They’re trying to get that paid for.”
Thanks to the help and support of friends and family, the couple has been able to raise just over $13,500 in the four years they’ve taken part in the ride. A lot of the money raised locally, he adds, is due in a large part to the local Legions and Lions clubs.
The Cadeaus plan to take part in the ride again next year, and say they are looking forward to the day when such a ride is not necessary.
