"To maximize opportunities we must think holistically": Simcoe County Warden Tony Guergis

Simcoe County Warden Tony Guergis hosted the Western Ontario Wardens' Caucus (WOWC) and Province of Ontario representatives in Alliston on Friday to discuss ways to unite communities and promote economic growth and prosperity on a regional basis.

"We have learned that evidence from across Ontario points to economic development as being most successful when it is addressed as a regional perspective," remarked Warden Guergis.

"Clearly this is a more prudent and strategic approach to economic development. The message to us from the Province is clear: if we want to ensure successful economic development, build it on a regional model.

"By working together we will be in a strong position to engage communities throughout western Ontario in promoting the region's economic potential."

The Western Ontario Wardens' Caucus is a group of the political leaders of 15 western Ontario counties including Simcoe that meet regularly to discuss and act on items of common interest.

Presentations were made by regional economic development agencies in Ontario detailing a range of economic development initiatives. A representative from the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade - Communities in Transition Program also addressed the caucus.

"To maximize opportunities we must think holistically," Warden Guergis added following the meeting. "And to succeed, we must think globally and work closely with all partners rather than competing with each other. We are stronger together.

"Our task now is to take this initiative to the next level through a collective leadership role to ensure economic opportunities flow to this area."
