Dozens of public sector employees top $100K

Royal Victoria Hospital CEO Janice Skot was the top public-sector earner in this region last year, followed by Georgian College president Brian Tamblyn and North Simcoe Muskoka LHIN president Jean Trimnell.

According to the annual Public Sector Public Disclosure summary of public employees earning more than $100,000 annually, released by Ontario’s Ministry of Finance Monday, Skot earned $275,009, slightly ahead of Tamblyn at $272,338. Trimnell earned $239,511.

Released each year as required by Ontario’s Public Sector Salary Disclosure Act (1996), the list is also known as the “sunshine list”. Available on the ministry of finance’s website, the list is broken down into sectors, including health care, education and municipalities.

In the health sector, hospital chief executive officers made the following: Collingwood’s General and Marine’s Linda Davis $180,393; Orillia Soldier’s Memorial’s Bernie Schmidt $268,117; and Alliston’s Stevenson Memorial’s Edward Takacs $155,385. At Penetanguishene General Hospital, four employees made the list, with CEO Carol Lambie leading the way at $149,787.

The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit paid eight “sunshine” salaries, with the two top being its medical officer of health and associate medical officer of health: Dr. Charles Gardner at $196,839 and Dr. Colin Lee at $150,661.

The North Simcoe Community Care Access Centre had six employees on the list, with executive director William Innes making $159,996 last year.

In education, the Simcoe County District School Board paid its education director Gord Campbell $178,059, while the Simcoe Muskoka Catholic District School Board paid its director Michael O’Keefe $180,868 last year. Barely making it onto the list of $100,000-plus earners were many elementary and secondary principals in both systems.

In municipalities, Barrie had 92 making the list, with many of those being police officers and firefighters. The city’s highest-earning administrator was Peter Lee, now retired, who made $281,787. His successor, Jon Babulic (who took on the job in March), made $142,566 between then and the end of the year. Barrie paid its general managers – Richard Forward and Craig Hebert -  approximately $109,000 last year, while chief librarian Al Davis brought home $104,205.

Barrie’s police chief Wayne Frechette earned $166,691. Deputy chief Steve Rogers made $149,140.

Simcoe County had 17 staff making more than $100,000 last year, with CAO Mark Aitken earning $189,657; he was followed by finance general manager Tom Evans at $170,512 and corporate services general manager Rick Newlove at $154,462. Paramedic services director Andrew Robert earned $119,492.

In Innisfil, CAO Larry Allison made $139,027; that municipality had a total of 14 on the list.

Neighbouring Bradford West Gwillimbury had five employees, including CAO Jay Currier at $170,187. New Tecumseth had two, including CAO Theresa Caron at $139,163.

Orillia taxpayers paid four $100,000-plus salaries for municipal officials: city manager Ian Brown at $139,890; public works director Peter Dance at $111,509; treasurer Robert Ripley at $111,467 and its fire chief at $101,357.

The Town of Wasaga Beach also had four on the list, with chief librarian Jackie Marshall making the most at $174,140, followed by CAO George Vadenboncoeur at $125,743. The Town of Collingwood paid three salaries over $100,000 last year: CAO Gordon Norris earned $120,822; leisure services director Peter Dunbar, $109,473, and fire chief Alexander Cunningham $107,771.

Municipalities with one each on the list were the townships of Oro-Medonte, Springwater, Clearview, Tiny, Ramara and Severn. CAOs in these municipalities took home salaries of $101,814 in Springwater,  $102,208 in Clearview, $104,644 in Ramara, $105,452 in Tiny and $108,390 in Severn.

In the environmental sector, the Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority paid three salaries, the highest to CAO Gayle Wood, at $127,784; her equivalent at the Nottawasaga Valley Conservation Authority, Wayne Wilson, made $107,006.

In social services, the Children’s Aid Society of Simcoe County had five employees making more than $100,000 last year, with executive director Mary Ballantyne taking home $146,339.

Simcoe Community Services – which runs group homes and offers a variety of support programs for individuals with intellectual disabilities, as well as administering several Ontario Early Years Centres, plus other preschool services – paid its executive director, Lynn Price $158,240.
