The Hornets pounded the Stayner Siskins 11-1 at the New Tec Rec Centre Friday night then went on to a 5-2 win at the Shamrock’s home barn in Erin on Saturday.

The Friday game against Stayner turned into a shooting gallery after the Hornets opened the scoring by putting three into the net in the space of a minute and a half in the first period.

The Alliston squad dominated the ice for the rest of the game, scoring five in the second period and finishing the third with three more.

A breakdown in the Siskins’ defense gave the Hornets a few opportunities to go one-on-one with the Stayner goalie.

Hornet captain Robbie Rutledge said they expected more from the visitors, but the big point spread doesn’t mean they’ll count them out next time.

“You never know with Stayner,” Rutledge said. “They had good teams in the past, but tonight was not a typical Stayner game.”

Rutledge said the Hornets are working well together on the ice.

“The rookies are coming along and looking awesome,” he said. “We’re playing more like a team this year.”

Hornets management made some key moves this season that resulted in a very strong looking forward line-up.

Of the current top 10 league-leading scorers, five are from the Alliston squad. Hornet winger Brett Eeles is at the top with 13 goals and one assist to his credit after six games. Rutledge, rookie centre Zenon Byblow, and veterans Kurtis Brossard and Ryan Algar are also listed in the top 10 in the points standings.

The new arena seems to already be having an impact on attendance. Friday’s game saw 240 people in the stands — an encouraging number given attendance in the old Alliston rink.

The Hornets have two home games this coming weekend.

The Schomberg Cougars will be in town on Fri., Oct. 12, with the puck drop scheduled for 7:30 p.m. On Sun., Oct. 14, the Hornets will host the Fergus Devils at 6:30 p.m.
